A&M-Victoria softball's late rallies come up short vs. No. 9 OLLU
SAN ANTONIO – The Texas A&M University-Victoria softball team tried to use a pair of late rallies on Friday against the No. 9-ranked team in the country.
But unfortunately, those rallies came up just short against Our Lady of the Lake University in Red River Athletic Conference play. The Jaguars fell to the Saints, 8-5 and 4-1, at the OLLU softball field.
With the losses, A&M-Victoria falls to 14-8 overall and 5-3 in conference play.
Cristela Trevino led the way for the Jaguars, going 3-for-7 at the plate with four RBIs over the two games.
Game 1
All of the Jaguars' runs in Game 1 came via home runs, including a grand slam in the seventh to make it a three-run game.
Emily Mayo made it a 2-1 game in the top of the second inning with a solo home run, her first of the season.
Madison Carr and Alyssa Carter were hit by a pitch in consecutive plate appearances before Angelina Morales walked to load the bases in front of Cristela Trevino.
Trevino then belted the grand slam in an attempt to spark a late comeback.
The Alice native led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Mayo and Khamryn Werdlow had the other two hits for A&M-Victoria.
Zoe Hardy suffered the loss in the circle, going four innings against the No. 9-ranked Saints.
Game 2
Trailing 2-0 going into the fifth, Fayth Hoover halved the deficit with an RBI single to score Mayo and give the Jaguars a chance before OLLU responded with two more runs the very next half inning.
Daizie Fuentez paced the offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Hoover, Mayo and Trevino had the other three hits for the Jaguars.
Haley Noska suffered the loss after going five innings in her start.
Madelyn Butler threw a scoreless inning in which she allowed only one hit.
