The Texas A&M University-Victoria softball team heads to Gulf Shores, Alabama, this week riding the momentum of a rivalry series win and one of the most productive starts in program history.
The Jaguars went 2-1 against Texas A&M-San Antonio in Red River Athletic Conference play, capped by a pair of dramatic walk-off victories on Feb. 27 before falling in extra innings in the series finale.
Junior Madison Carr delivered both game-winning hits in Friday's doubleheader sweep — an RBI double in a 6-5 win in Game 1 and an RBI single in a 7-6 victory in Game 2 — earning RRAC Player of the Week honors after hitting .455 for the week.
A&M-Victoria (11-3, 5-1 RRAC) extended its winning streak to six games before Saturday's setback, which snapped the run but did little to slow a team that has surged into the national statistical rankings. The Jaguars enter the Gulf Coast Invitational ranked 13th nationally in team batting average at .369 and 14th in runs scored with 113 through 14 games.
Even in Saturday's loss, the Jaguars showed their late-game resolve. Angelina Morales delivered a game-tying, two-run double in the seventh inning to force extras before TAMUSA plated three runs in the eighth. Haley Noska struck out a season-high eight batters in seven innings, while Zoe Hardy absorbed just her first loss in seven appearances.
Now, A&M-Victoria turns its focus to five games at the Gulf Coast Invitational, beginning with a Friday morning matchup against Williams Baptist to kick off a five-game tournament set against unfamiliar opponents.
Fast Starts
The Jaguars' offense has been the catalyst behind their 12-3 start, combining depth, power and speed to overwhelm opponents.
A&M-Victoria has totaled 143 hits, including 30 doubles, six triples and four home runs, for a .508 slugging percentage. The lineup has also drawn 52 walks against just 37 strikeouts, underscoring its discipline at the plate. The Jaguars are 35-for-38 in stolen base attempts, which ranks 24th in the NAIA.
Morales leads the team with a .450 batting average, 16 RBIs and a .675 slugging percentage, while freshman Cristela Trevino has been equally dangerous, hitting .472 with two home runs and a team-best .778 slugging percentage.
Alyssa Carter is batting .436 with 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored, providing production near the top of the order.
Carr's emergence as a clutch performer has added another layer. The junior shortstop is hitting .424 with seven doubles and a .697 slugging percentage, and she has recorded a hit in five straight games. Her back-to-back walk-offs against TAMUSA highlighted the Jaguars' ability to deliver in key moments.
The offensive balance has been especially evident in victories. In the team's wins, A&M-Victoria is batting .415 as a team, compared to .157 in three losses.
When the Jaguars generate early offense and sustain pressure, they have proven difficult to contain. A&M-Victoria is 10-1 when scoring first and have outscored opponents 57-7 in the first two innings.
Pitching depth is key
While the offense has drawn headlines, the pitching staff has quietly posted a 2.57 earned run average across 87 innings. Opponents are hitting .295 against the Jaguars, who have allowed just 32 earned runs and no home runs this season.
Hardy has been the staff anchor, compiling a 5-1 record with a 1.81 ERA and three complete games in seven appearances. She has struck out 24 batters in 31 innings while limiting opponents to eight earned runs. Her complete-game effort in Game 1 against TAMUSA helped secure the series-opening win.
Noska has provided a steady left-handed complement, going 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA and 20 strikeouts in 22.1 innings. Her eight-strikeout performance in Saturday's finale demonstrated her ability to miss bats in high-leverage situations.
Jocelyne Galvan (2-0, 2.00 ERA) and Madelyn Butler have added depth, while freshman Kailea Freeman picked up her first collegiate victory in relief during the TAMUSA series.
