The Texas A&M University-Victoria baseball team dropped its two games to close out the South Texas Shuffle on Saturday.
The No. 20-ranked Jaguars fell to No. 17 Wayland Baptist, 4-1, in Game 1 and then to Doane (Neb.), 8-3, to close out the weekend.
With the losses, A&M-Victoria falls to 6-5 on the year.
Game 1 vs. Wayland Baptist
The Jaguars struck first against the Pioneers with Beck Zimmerman scoring Jackson Purcell in the bottom of the first inning.
A&M-Victoria had an opportunity to break the game open in the third with the bases loaded and nobody out after back-to-back-to-back singles from Trevor Berger, Antonio Benitez and Connor Kaiser. But the Jaguars stranded the bases loaded and only managed one hit over the next three innings.
Kaiser led the team, going 2-for-3 against the Pioneers.
Wayland scored each of its four runs in the fifth inning to spoil what was a strong outing for junior right-handed pitcher Jacob Baker. The Cuero native had allowed just three hits in the previous four innings of the game and started the game strong by striking out the side in the first.
Justin Mireles threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief behind Baker, picking up a strikeout.
Game 2 vs. Doane
For the second time in as many games against the Tigers, A&M-Victoria had to play from behind.
This time, Doane built an 8-0 lead that was insurmountable for the Jaguars, who overcame a five-run deficit on Friday to beat the Tigers.
A&M-Victoria scored a run in each of the final three innings thanks to RBIs from Benitez, Xavier Ortega and Landon Robinson.
The Jaguars had the tying run in the on-deck circle after Robinson's bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning, but once again stranded the bases loaded.
Jackson Purcell had a pair of hits in the loss. Kaiser, Zimmerman and Robinson each had one hit.
Brayton Cardwell suffered the loss after throwing three innings in his first start since 2023.
Andrew Rivera made his season debut and hurled two scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and picking up a strikeout.
